Unlike 'old age' homes of yesterday, senior housing has turned into a destination goal for many seniors. Many buildings / areas even accept anyone over the age of 55 ' you don't have to be a retired frail senior citizen to enjoy the benefits that many provide.
Some senior projects are nothing more than condo and apartment complexes that refuse to have children. Others provide a more intense focus on the elderly and offer onsite services that include medical specialists, transportation, eating and dining, a common room to meet with friends, building security, and room to exercise.
Many of these buildings are available for greatly reduced prices for individuals and couples who receive government assistance or who are living on fixed incomes and fall within certain guidelines. There are specific documents one will need to provide, and have verified, in order to have the application approved.
Depending on the location many residences allow overnight guests. This is convenient for out of town family who are visiting to check up on parents, grandparents, etc. For couples who want to plan for this, condos and apartments are available in multi bedroom units and with additional bathrooms as well.
For elderly couples, many buildings offer individual panic buttons in case of emergency ' invasion, medical, etc. There is a small monthly fee usually in order to be hardwired to the local police and fire departments but most immediate families pick up this expense if the elderly parents can't afford it.
Depending on the level of care that might be needed by certain individuals in advanced years, many facilities provide two hot meals a day in a community dining room, although individual living units do have fully equipped kitchens.
Various activities are frequently planned such as shopping, day excursions, and even regular cocktail hours and card games complete with snacks and entertainment.
